What is a DOT Medical Card?
One of the most common questions I get from commercial drivers is, “What exactly is a DOT medical card?”
Think of your DOT Medical Card as your “health passport” for safely driving large commercial vehicles. If you drive trucks, buses, or any large commercial vehicle, the U.S. government (Department of Transportation or DOT) wants to make sure you are healthy enough to do so.
This card is proof that a certified medical examiner, who is listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners has checked your health and determined that you are medically fit to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely.
Why Do I Need It?
You need a DOT Medical Card because it’s a crucial safety rule for everyone on the road.

It’s the law: It’s a federal requirement if you operate commercial vehicles. Without a valid DOT Medical Card, you cannot legally drive these vehicles.
How Do I Get One?
To get your DOT Medical Card, you must complete a DOT Physical Exam.
This exam is performed by a medical examiner who is certified by the FMCSA and listed on the FMCSA National Registry. This means we have specialized training and are officially recognized to know exactly what to look for to ensure you meet the necessary health standards.
During the exam, we’ll check things like:

Your vision (with or without corrective lenses).

A urine sample (to check for general health indicators, not a drug test).

And other important aspects of your health to ensure you’re fit for duty.
If everything looks good and you meet the requirements, I will issue your DOT Medical Card within a few days. This card is valid for a certain period, typically two years, but it might be for a shorter time if you have a health condition that needs more frequent monitoring.
What Should I Do With My DOT Medical Card?
It’s very important that you always carry your DOT Medical Card with you when you are operating your commercial vehicle. You should also provide a copy to your employer and, in some states, to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
